Andres Keevallik was born on 24 February 1943 in Pärnu.
Education and further training
Rapla Secondary School, 1961. Tallinn Polytechnic Institute, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, majoring in automation and telemechanics, 1966 (cum laude and with the Mente et Manu medal). Further training in Estonia and abroad: Linköping University 1976–77; Karlsruhe University 1986–87; Grenoble University 1993; Darmstadt Technical University 1992 and 1994.

Candidate of Technical Sciences, 1974 (Institute of Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR); title of Associate Professor, 1976; title of Professor, 1992.
Career
At TalTech from 1966–2016; engineer, assistant, senior lecturer at the Department of Automation and Telemechanics 1967–1971; senior lecturer at the Department of Automation 1974–1975; senior lecturer at the Department of Electronic Computers in 1975, associate professor in 1976, head of department 1976–1987; head of the laboratory for the design and diagnostics of digital systems 1987–1992; professor of digital technology at the Institute of Computer Engineering 1992–2000; director 1992–1995; dean of the Faculty of Information Technology 1995–1997; head of the IT field at Eesti Ühispank, vice president 1997–1999, concurrently professor of digital technology (25% workload); rector 2000–2005, vice-rector for development 2005–2010, rector 2010–2015, professor of digital technology 2015–2016, rector emeritus from 2016.
Main research directions
Development of decomposition-based synthesis methods for the implementation of highly complex digital control systems on a microelectronic basis, creation of automated design systems for the synthesis of digital control systems. Technical cybernetics research ranked among the top five in the USSR in 1985 and 1986. Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Committee on Technical Cybernetics’ Council on Automation and Digital System Theory 1982–1988. Author of over 70 scientific publications and 4 inventor’s certificates. Supervised 8 candidate or doctoral dissertations.
