Tallinn University of Technology alumnus, scientist, and long-serving rector Andres Keevallik turned 81 on February 24. To honor the remarkable contribution of Rector Emeritus Keevallik to the development of TalTech, his alma mater has established the Andres Keevallik Named Fund under the Tallinn University of Technology Development Fund’s support portal. The fund’s goal is to support TalTech students, faculty members, and initiatives vital to the university’s development.

The fund’s initial capital consists of an €8,000 contribution from the university. Everyone who appreciates Andres Keevallik’s work and invaluable contribution to TalTech’s progress is warmly invited to support the fund with additional donations.

Curriculum Vitae

Andres Keevallik was born on 24 February 1943 in Pärnu.

Education and further training

Rapla Secondary School, 1961. Tallinn Polytechnic Institute, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, majoring in automation and telemechanics, 1966 (cum laude and with the Mente et Manu medal). Further training in Estonia and abroad: Linköping University 1976–77; Karlsruhe University 1986–87; Grenoble University 1993; Darmstadt Technical University 1992 and 1994.

Academic degree

Candidate of Technical Sciences, 1974 (Institute of Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR); title of Associate Professor, 1976; title of Professor, 1992.

Career

At TalTech from 1966–2016; engineer, assistant, senior lecturer at the Department of Automation and Telemechanics 1967–1971; senior lecturer at the Department of Automation 1974–1975; senior lecturer at the Department of Electronic Computers in 1975, associate professor in 1976, head of department 1976–1987; head of the laboratory for the design and diagnostics of digital systems 1987–1992; professor of digital technology at the Institute of Computer Engineering 1992–2000; director 1992–1995; dean of the Faculty of Information Technology 1995–1997; head of the IT field at Eesti Ühispank, vice president 1997–1999, concurrently professor of digital technology (25% workload); rector 2000–2005, vice-rector for development 2005–2010, rector 2010–2015, professor of digital technology 2015–2016, rector emeritus from 2016.

Main research directions

Development of decomposition-based synthesis methods for the implementation of highly complex digital control systems on a microelectronic basis, creation of automated design systems for the synthesis of digital control systems. Technical cybernetics research ranked among the top five in the USSR in 1985 and 1986. Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Committee on Technical Cybernetics’ Council on Automation and Digital System Theory 1982–1988. Author of over 70 scientific publications and 4 inventor’s certificates. Supervised 8 candidate or doctoral dissertations.

Chair of the national computer engineering section of the A.S. Popov Radio, Electronics and Communications Scientific and Technical Society 1980–1992; Vice President of the Estonian Association of Engineers and Estonia’s representative in the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI) 1996–1999; President of the Estonian Association of Electrical Engineers 1992–1998; Member of the Board of EITSA (later HITSA) 2000–2015; Member of the Estonian Research and Development Council 2002–2005, 2010–2015; Member of the Estonian Development Fund Council 2010–2015; Member and Vice Chair of the Estonian Informatics Council 2001–2010; Chair of the Culture, Education, and Science Committee of the President’s Academic Council 2002–2005; Chair of the Ministry of Defence’s Research Council 2002–2005; President of BALTECH 2003–2005; Member of the Tallinn Science Park Development Foundation Council 2005–2010; Member of the Public Agreement Foundation Council 2003–2007; Member of the Estonian Cooperation Assembly Council 2007–2010.

Awarding of the Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded once a year as part of the Tallinn University of Technology Development Foundation’s autumn scholarship competition. The first scholarship named after Andres Keevallik was awarded in autumn 2023. The scholarship is intended for a successful doctoral student of the Faculty of Information Technology at Tallinn University of Technology who demonstrates an active attitude to life, dedication to striving for excellence in their scientific field, and outstanding success in fulfilling the tasks set out in their doctoral dissertation plan. The scholarship amount is 5,000 euros and is paid out as a one-time grant. More detailed conditions can be found in the statute.

Where does my donation go?

The donation is allocated to a designated sub-fund created within the Foundation of Tallinn University of Technology Development Fund, according to the chosen fund. All transfers made to the sub-fund are awarded as scholarships to students or teachers through a public competition process.

Can I deduct income tax?

Yes, of course you can!

The Foundation of Tallinn University of Technology Development Fund is listed as a tax-exempt organization, which means that donations to the fund are tax-deductible. Individuals can deduct donated amounts up to 1200 euros per year from their taxable income. All donations made through the support portal toeta.taltech.ee or directly to the Development Fund accounts, where the donor provides their personal identification code, can be considered for income tax refund. At the beginning of the calendar year, the Development Fund submits all necessary information to the Tax and Customs Board, and the summary of donations will appear in the donor’s income tax declaration.
